MotionTrace is a body-mapping technology which uses our specific shape and movement to generate the structure of our clothing.​

It is designed as a tool for coaches, physiotherapists or individual athletes. The personalised apparel enhances our proprioception. Proprioception is the body's ability to sense its movement and position.​

MotionTrace helps us understand the position and movement of our body in real time through the feel of the garment on the skin, whilst providing optimised postural support.

Motion Capture.

MotionTrace uses inertial motion capture through a sensor garment. A compression top which holds a network of 42 pressure sensors, placed over the back and shoulder.
​
Each sensor is indicated by a grey dot on the garment in the animation above.

Garment Generation.

Pressure change
Lattice change
As the body moves it presses itself onto the inside of the garment.
​
When pressure is applied to a sensor, algorithmic modelling translates this data into a virtual lattice, as the pressure increases the connections between the lattice strengthen.

Movement of the torso causes fluctuating pressure across the grid of sensors. The trace of this movement can be seen in the shifting geometry of the lattice.

Specific movements or positions of the torso can be recorded. The lattice of these movements are left as a permanent trace.

Garment Fabrication.

The permanent trace forms the final structure of a new garment design. The new design is physically manufactured as a bespoke piece.

The final garment is comprised of two layers. The outer body is cut from a lightweight technical jersey and the generated lattice is cut from a tacky polyurethane adhered to the inside of the garment.

The polyurethane layer provides additional grip and compression on the body.

The tacky surface of the lattice is easily discernible on the skin.
Maintaining contact with the lattice trains the body how to move whilst providing optimal support and compression.
